Learning Objectives





  • Reading: We will practice using background knowledge and clues from the text to make inferences about  characters, settings, and events in stories. 
  • Writing: Students write stories about their fathers in preparation for Donuts with Dad. We will continue to work on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. We are also working on writing "juicy" sentences with adjectives, metaphors, and quotation marks. 
  • Math: We will continue to work on adding double digit numbers. We will use this to add double digit numbers in story problems. We will also review missing addends and how to solve them.
  • Science: We will learn about the life cycle of plants. 
  • Character:  Zones of Regulation (The Zones of Regulation is a program designed to help students gain skills in consciously regulating their emotions and actions.) We will hold class meetings and work on finding positive and logical solutions to common classroom problems.

  • First Graders will be taking a field trip the Science Museum of Western Virginia on Tuesday, May 15.
  • Please return permission slips and $8.50 by Friday, May 4th.

Learning Objectives






  • Reading: We will practice using background knowledge and clues from the text to make inferences about  characters, settings, and events in stories. 
  • Writing: Students write stories about their mothers in preparation for Mother's Day. We will continue to work on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. We are also working on writing "juicy" sentences with adjectives, metaphors, and quotation marks. 
  • Math: We will review place value. Students should be able to explain the value of numbers in the ones, tens, and hundreds place. We will begin adding two-digit numbers.
  • Science: We will learn about Earth Day and recycling. 
  • Character:  Zones of Regulation (The Zones of Regulation is a program designed to help students gain skills in consciously regulating their emotions and actions.) We will hold class meetings and work on finding positive and logical solutions to common classroom problems.

  • Please return permission slips and $8.00 by Friday, May 4th.
  • Interims will go home on Wednesday, May 25th. Please check for these in your child's Daily Folder.

Learning Objectives






  • Reading: We will practice identifying the main idea and supporting details in texts we read. 
  • Writing: Students write fictional stories about an animal that has the following elements: beginning/middle/end, problem/solution, character dialogue, etc. We will continue to work on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. We are also working on writing "juicy" sentences with adjectives, metaphors, and quotation marks. 
  • Math: We will be reviewing and assessing Unit 7 (fractions, telling time, adding doubles, and graphing). We will then focus on calendar skills to ensure students can read a calendar.
  • Social Studies: Students will be learning about wants and needs as well as goods and services. 
  • Character:  Zones of Regulation (The Zones of Regulation is a program designed to help students gain skills in consciously regulating their emotions and actions.) We will hold class meetings and work on finding positive and logical solutions to common classroom problems.

  • Reading: We will make predictions before and during the reading. After reading we will discuss if our predictions were correct.
  • Writing: Students will research facts about an animal of their choice. They will write an informational book about their animal. We will continue to work on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. We are also working on writing "juicy" sentences with adjectives, metaphors, and quotation marks.
