Upcoming Events for October 3rd-7th


Here’s a Sneak Peek at Next Week:

Learning Objectives











  • Reading: What are the habits of a  good reader? We will learn about the Flippy Dolphin strategy (Flip the vowels. EX: Try out a long "a" sound if that doesn't sound right try the short "a" sound). We will study words that have l-blends. We will practice reading, sorting, writing, and spelling during Word Study time. 
  • Writing: We will write stories about a person in our family. We will work on adding more details to our illustrations and sentences. We are working on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. I encourage students to be fearless spellers. This means they sound out unknown words or look to the Word Wall for assistance. 
  • Math: We will learn how to write subtraction equations and use pictures to help us solve subtraction story problems. 
  • Social Studies: We will finish our Diversity unit. We will learn about African, Mexican, Chinese, German, and Japanese cultures. We will also be learning about fire safety. 
  • Character:  How can we take ownership of our problems? (I teach the students these steps: 1.) Own it! 2.) Fix it 3.) Learn from it 4.) Move on

Mega Math has also been added to the Math websites. Mega Math offers games that are organized by different math skills.

Tumble Books has been added to the Reading websites. The students LOVE this website. Simply click on the e-book link.

Learning Objectives











  • Reading: What are the habits of a  good reader? We will learn about the Chunky Monkey strategy (Break the word into chunks you already know). We will study words that have r-blends. We will practice reading, sorting, writing, and spelling during Word Study time. 
  • Writing: We will write stories about special places we like to visit. We will work on adding more details to our illustrations and sentences. We are working on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. I encourage students to be fearless spellers. This means they sound out unknown words or look to the Word Wall for assistance. 
  • Math: We will continue to learn about addition strategies (counting on using dot drawing, putting the larger number in your head and adding on with fingers, using a number line, mental math). We will introduce subtraction.
  • Social Studies: We will begin a Diversity unit. We will learn about African, Mexican, Chinese, German, and Japanese cultures. 
  • Character:  How can I be an AES Star and Show Good Citizenship?

  • STEM: Our first STEM challenge was a success! The students became engineers as they asked questions, came up with a plan, created, tested, and improved their apple containers. I also saw a lot of good teamwork as they shared ideas and worked together in small groups.  Pictures will be emailed soon!

    Learning Objectives










    • Reading: What are the habits of a  good reader? We will learn about the Stretchy Snake strategy (stretch out the sounds you hear to solve a word). We will study words that have s-blends. We will practice reading, sorting, writing, and spelling during Word Study time. 
    • Writing: We will write stories about animals we love. We will learn how to add more details to our illustrations and sentences. We are working on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. 
    • Math: We will continue to learn about number partners and equations. We will discuss what it means to be equal. We will investigate the value of coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter).
    • Social Studies: We continue our study on maps. Students will be expected to know cardinal directions (North, South, East, West), how to construct a simple map, and how to read a map using a map key/legend.
    • Character:  How can I be an AES Star and "Respect Self, Others, and Property?"
    • STEM: We will start our first STEM project! Here is the problem we will solve:
    It's harvest time in the mountains of Virginia and workers are busy picking apples. 

Farmer Brown needs your help! 
      The apples must be moved to the other side of the 

        orchard. Farmer Brown does not have a bag or 

container to carry the apples.
          Your challenge is to design a container to carry as 

many apples as possible.

          **Students may bring money for the book fair. Our time to goes is after lunch 12:25-12:30 (Monday-Friday)
          The book Fair is also open late On Thursday from 10:30-6PM if you would like to join your child at the Book Fair.

          Upcoming Events for September 12th-16th

          Here’s a Sneak Peek at Next Week:

          Learning Objectives











          • Reading: What are the habits of a  good reader? We will learn about the Eagle Eye strategy (look at the pictures to solve unknown words) and Lips the Fish strategy (get your mouth ready to make the first letter sound). We will build endurance with Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, and Listen to Reading. We will study the short "u" vowel. We will practice reading, sorting, writing, and spelling during Word Study time. 
          • Writing: We will write stories about what we do with our friends. We will learn how to add more details to our illustrations and sentences. We are working on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. 
          • Math: We will be starting Unit 2. The focus will be on addition, subtraction, and equations. We will be learning through games, story problems, and traditional equations. 
          • Social Studies: We will begin our study on maps. Students will be expected to know cardinal directions (North, South, East, West), how to construct a simple map, and how to read a map using a map key/legend.
          • Character:  How can we find solutions and not blame? How can I be an AES Star and "Act Kindly"?

           **If your child cannot tie their shoes, please practice this skill at home. In first grade we need to do this skill independently!

          **The students are doing a great job reading and writing independently!



          **The students have started their class jobs. Two students are the "filers." They file graded work into their classmates mailboxes. We are still learning how to do this! Please send work back that does not belong to your child. :) Thank you!
