Learning Objectives

• Reading: We will practice reading informational texts and answering questions. Students will learn how to use context clues as a strategy to find the answers in the passages. 
• Writing: We will write stories about something that has happened in our life. Students' stories will include a beginning, middle, and end. Students will describe how they felt during each part of their story.  We will continue to work on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. 
• Math: We will continue Unit 5 which focuses on money. Students will be identifying coins and their value along with counting groups of coins.
• Social Studies: We will discuss Martin Luther King Jr. and why he is an American hero. 

• Character:  Zones of Regulation (The Zones of Regulation is a program designed to help students gain skills in consciously regulating their emotions and actions.)

• Reading: We will practice reading comprehension. Students will answer the following questions after reading a story: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?
• Writing: We will write stories about something that has happened in our life. Students' stories will include a beginning, middle, and end. Learning Objectives

• Reading: We will work on summarizing narrative stories. Students will practice this skill aided by a graphic organizer. They will give an oral summary to a partner. 
• Writing: We will write fictional stories about a snowy day. We are working on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. I encourage students to be fearless spellers. This means they sound out unknown words or look to the Word Wall for assistance. 
• Math: We will complete our unit on place value. Students should be able to look at groups of tens and ones and determine the number. We will be adding tens and ones.  
• Social Studies:We will learn about different holidays including Hanukkah, Ramadan, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. 

• Character:  Using the Wheel of Choice to help find solutions

• Math: We will continue learning about place value. Students should be able to look at groups of tens and ones and determine the number. We will be adding tens and ones.  
• Social Studies:We will continue our unit on past, present, and future. On December 9th we will have pioneer day where students rotate around to each class to learn something about the past.  

As part of our Social Studies Unit first grade students are learning the concept of past, present, and future time. On Monday, December 5th students will begin making a timeline of their life.

• Please send a baby picture of your first grader that you don’t mind being used on the timeline by Monday, December 5th.

On Friday, December 9th, we will enjoy a day of pretending. First grade students will pretend to be back in the 1800s. We will dress like the “Pioneers” in the past. Girls may dress like characters in the Little House books by dressing in a long skirt/dress, bonnets, and aprons. The boys could dress like Daniel Boone or wear bib-overalls, jeans and white shirts or flannel shirts. Boys can also wear bandannas, straw hats, or cowboy hats. Students will rotate to each first grade classroom and “go back in the past” with a variety of activities.

The students will also engage in bartering or trading  on Friday, December 9th. This is optional (but always an activity the students enjoy). Students are asked to bring 5 things to school that they do not wish to have back. It can be small toys, stickers, pieces of candy, etc. Then they will be given time to barter with each other. We will read Ox Cart Man and Boom Town to help students understand what it means to barter/trade for goods.
