Upcoming Events for September 25th-29th

Here’s a Sneak Peek at Next Week:

Learning Objectives

  • Reading: What are the habits of a  good reader? We will learn about the Chunky Monkey strategy (Break the word into chunks you already know). We will study words that have r-blends. We will practice reading, sorting, writing, and spelling during Word Study time.
  • Writing: We will write stories about special places we like to visit. We will work on adding more details to our illustrations and sentences. We are working on writing sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. I encourage students to be fearless spellers. This means they sound out unknown words or look to the Word Wall for assistance.
  • Math: We will continue to learn about addition strategies (counting on using dot drawing, putting the larger number in your head and adding on with fingers, using a number line, mental math). We will introduce subtraction.
  • Social Studies: We will be learning map skills. Students will develop map skills by a.) recognizing basic map symbols; b.) using cardinal directions on maps; c.) identifying the shapes of the United States and Virginia on maps and globes; d.) locating Washington, D.C., the capital of the U.S.A and Richmond, the capital of Virginia, on a United States Map
  • Character:  How can I be an AES Star and Show Good Citizenship? How can I fill other people's buckets?
    • STEM: We will start our first STEM project! Here is the problem we will solve:
It's harvest time in the mountains of Virginia and workers are busy picking apples.

Farmer Brown needs your help!
The apples must be moved to the other side of the

orchard. Farmer Brown does not have a bag or

container to carry the apples.
Your challenge is to design a container to carry as

many apples as possible.

2.) Read each night for 20 minutes (leveled reader books)
